Piston Ring Set Standard 391170

$70.00

The Standard Piston Ring Set is designed for select OMC, Johnson and Evinrude two-stroke outboard engines using standard-bore pistons.

Piston rings help seal combustion pressure, transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall, and control the movement of oil and fuel mixture around the piston. Worn or damaged rings can contribute to low compression, hard starting, reduced power, excessive blow-by, and poor overall engine performance.

Description

Johnson/Evinrude Standard Piston Ring Set – Restore Compression & Piston Sealing

The Standard Piston Ring Set is used on select OMC, Johnson and Evinrude two-stroke outboard engines equipped with standard-bore pistons.

The piston rings form the critical seal between the piston and cylinder wall. They help contain combustion pressure above the piston while allowing the piston to move freely inside the cylinder.

When piston rings become worn, stuck, scored, broken, or lose their ability to seal correctly, engine performance can drop significantly.

Common Signs of Worn or Damaged Piston Rings

Possible symptoms may include:

  • Low compression
  • Uneven compression between cylinders
  • Hard starting
  • Reduced power
  • Poor acceleration
  • Rough or inconsistent running
  • Excessive blow-by
  • Difficulty maintaining proper RPM
  • Loss of top-end performance
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Fouled spark plugs
  • Visible scoring or damage discovered during teardown
  • Engine performance that continues to decline even after fuel and ignition systems have been checked

Because several engine problems can produce similar symptoms, a compression test and proper cylinder inspection are recommended before replacing piston rings.

What Piston Rings Do

Piston rings perform several important functions inside a two-stroke outboard engine.

They help:

  • Seal combustion pressure inside the cylinder
  • Maintain proper compression
  • Transfer heat from the piston into the cylinder wall
  • Support efficient combustion
  • Maintain consistent engine performance
  • Reduce combustion gases escaping past the piston

If the rings no longer seal correctly, power can be lost and the engine may become increasingly difficult to tune or start.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Standard-Bore Replacement – Designed for engines using standard-size pistons and cylinders
  • Restores Compression Sealing – Helps maintain proper combustion pressure
  • Supports Engine Performance – Proper ring seal helps maintain power throughout the RPM range
  • Ideal for Powerhead Rebuilds – Common replacement item during piston and cylinder service
  • Useful for Engine Refreshes – Appropriate when cylinders and pistons remain within service limits
  • Performance & Racing Use – Proper ring seal is especially important in engines operated at sustained high RPM

When Should Piston Rings Be Replaced?

Replacement should be considered when:

  • Compression is low
  • Compression varies significantly between cylinders
  • Rings are stuck in the piston grooves
  • Ring edges are chipped or damaged
  • Rings show excessive wear
  • Cylinder scoring has occurred
  • A piston is being replaced
  • The engine is undergoing a complete powerhead rebuild
  • Ring end gap exceeds service limits

Piston rings should also be inspected whenever the engine has experienced overheating, lubrication failure, piston damage, or internal scoring.

Inspect the Cylinder Before Installing New Rings

Installing new rings in a damaged or excessively worn cylinder may not restore proper compression.

Before installation, inspect the cylinder for:

  • Scoring
  • Taper
  • Out-of-round wear
  • Excessive bore clearance
  • Glazing
  • Corrosion
  • Heat damage

The piston should also be checked for:

  • Ring groove wear
  • Cracks
  • Skirt damage
  • Heat discoloration
  • Excessive clearance
  • Wrist pin bore wear

If the cylinder has been bored oversize, the appropriate oversize piston and ring set must be used instead of this standard set.

Break-In & Assembly Considerations

Proper installation is critical to piston ring life and sealing.

During assembly:

  • Make sure ring grooves are clean
  • Verify correct ring orientation
  • Confirm ring end gap
  • Inspect locating pins if applicable
  • Lubricate components according to the service procedure
  • Make sure rings are properly seated during piston installation

After a rebuild, follow the correct engine break-in procedure to help the rings seat properly against the cylinder walls.

Performance & Racing Considerations

For performance and race outboards, ring seal is critical because the engine spends significant time at high RPM and under heavy combustion load.

Even a small loss of ring seal can reduce compression and power, especially at the upper end of the RPM range.

At Liquid Revolutions, we know that a healthy piston-and-ring combination is one of the foundations of a strong two-stroke powerhead. When rebuilding or refreshing an engine, questionable rings are not worth reusing.

Whether you’re repairing a recreational Johnson/Evinrude outboard or rebuilding a performance engine, the Standard Piston Ring Set helps restore the sealing needed for reliable compression and consistent engine operation.
