Description

Upper Crankshaft Roller Bearing with Seal

The Upper Crankshaft Roller Bearing with seal is used in select OMC, Johnson and Evinrude outboard powerheads to support the crankshaft and allow it to rotate smoothly under engine load.

The crankshaft bearing is a critical internal engine component. It helps keep the crankshaft properly supported and aligned while handling the forces created by combustion and high engine RPM. When a bearing becomes worn, damaged, corroded, or develops excessive clearance, it can affect crankshaft stability and lead to additional internal engine wear.

Common Signs of a Worn or Damaged Crankshaft Bearing

Possible symptoms of crankshaft bearing wear may include:

  • Abnormal knocking, rumbling, or growling noises
  • Excessive crankshaft movement or play
  • Increased engine vibration
  • Rough or inconsistent engine operation
  • Premature crankshaft seal wear
  • Metal debris found during engine inspection
  • Bearing roughness when rotating the crankshaft by hand
  • Visible pitting, corrosion, discoloration, or wear on the bearing
  • Reduced reliability at higher RPM
  • Internal engine damage associated with bearing failure

Because many internal engine problems can create similar symptoms, the powerhead should be properly inspected before determining that the bearing is the source of the problem.

Why the Upper Crankshaft Bearing Matters

A properly functioning crankshaft bearing helps maintain crankshaft alignment while allowing smooth rotation throughout the engine’s RPM range.

If the bearing develops excessive clearance or surface damage, the crankshaft may no longer remain properly supported. This can place additional stress on:

  • Crankshaft seals
  • Crankshaft journals
  • Connecting rods
  • Other main and center bearings
  • Crankcase components
  • Internal rotating assemblies

Excessive crankshaft movement can also make it more difficult for nearby seals to maintain proper crankcase sealing.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Supports the Crankshaft – Helps maintain proper crankshaft positioning and alignment
  • Promotes Smooth Rotation – Roller-bearing design reduces friction between rotating components
  • Helps Maintain Engine Reliability – Replacing a damaged bearing helps protect surrounding powerhead components
  • Important for High-RPM Operation – Critical for engines operating under sustained load and elevated RPM
  • Ideal for Powerhead Rebuilds – Common replacement item during crankshaft and internal engine service
  • Useful for Performance Applications – Appropriate for select recreational and racing Johnson/Evinrude engines

When Should Crankshaft Bearing Be Replaced?

Replacement should be considered when:

  • The bearing feels rough when rotated
  • Excessive crankshaft play is present
  • Rollers show pitting, scoring, or corrosion
  • The bearing cage is damaged
  • Metal contamination has circulated through the engine
  • The crankshaft has suffered internal damage
  • The powerhead experienced lubrication-related failure
  • The engine is undergoing a complete rebuild and the existing bearing condition is uncertain

Bearings that have experienced significant contamination, overheating, or internal engine failure should not be reused simply because they appear visually acceptable.

Powerhead Rebuild Recommendation

When replacing the upper crankshaft bearing, inspect the surrounding components at the same time, particularly:

  • Upper crankshaft seal
  • Upper bearing O-ring
  • Crankshaft journal
  • Crankcase bearing surface
  • Center and lower crankshaft bearings
  • Connecting rod bearings

At Liquid Revolutions, we understand that reliable powerhead components become even more important when an outboard is operated in performance or racing conditions. Proper bearing condition helps keep the crankshaft stable, protects surrounding components, and contributes to consistent engine performance from idle through high RPM.

Always verify your Johnson/Evinrude engine model number and OEM part number before ordering to ensure proper fitment.
