Description

Johnson/Evinrude Crankcase to Cylinder Screw Set 0308747

The Johnson/Evinrude Screw is a crankcase to cylinder bolt set of 2 bolts used on many OMC outboard powerheads.

Unlike some SST-45-specific components, 308747 was also used extensively on standard production Johnson/Evinrude engines, including numerous 2-cylinder outboards.

Its primary purpose in these applications is to help secure the crankcase to the cylinder assembly and maintain proper clamping of the powerhead.

Stock Johnson/Evinrude Applications

OMC used 308747 for many years on production Johnson/Evinrude engines.

It appears in cylinder and crankcase assemblies on numerous models, including select:

  • 35 HP
  • 40 HP
  • 45 HP
  • 48 HP
  • 50 HP
  • 55 HP
  • 60 HP

and other OMC applications depending on model year and engine family.

On many production 2-cylinder engines, 2 bolts are used in the crankcase to cylinder assembly.

Because OMC hardware was frequently shared across different engines, always verify the part number and quantity for your specific model before ordering.

SST-45 / Formula Light Application

The SST-45 / Formula Light powerhead also uses 308747 as part of the crankcase to cylinder fastening system.

For the SST-45 configuration:

  • Part Number: 308747 / 0308747
  • Description: Screw, Crankcase to Cylinder
  • Quantity Required: 2 per engine
  • Location: Cylinder & Crankcase Assembly

These two screws work together with the other crankcase fasteners, including the 308742 and 308752 bolts, to securely clamp the powerhead assembly together.

308747 vs. 308742 vs. 308752

The 0308747, 0308742 and 0308752 are all identified as crankcase to cylinder screws on applicable Johnson/Evinrude engines, but they are not the same fastener.

On the SST-45 powerhead:

  • 308747 – Quantity 2
  • 308742 – Quantity 8
  • 308752 – Quantity 4

This is why it is important to match the correct bolts to its position rather than assuming all of the crankcase fasteners are identical.

What the 308747 Screw Does

The crankcase and cylinder assembly must remain securely clamped together to maintain proper internal alignment and sealing.

The 0308747 bolt help provide the clamping force needed to maintain:

  • Crankcase alignment
  • Crankshaft support
  • Bearing alignment
  • Proper crankcase sealing
  • Correct internal clearances
  • Stable powerhead assembly

A damaged or incorrect fastener can make proper assembly more difficult and may affect the integrity of the crankcase joint.

Common Reasons to Replace

Inspect the bolts whenever the powerhead is disassembled.

Replacement should be considered if you find:

  • Corroded threads
  • Rounded or damaged heads
  • Pitting
  • Bent fasteners
  • Damaged threads
  • Evidence of over-tightening
  • Mismatched replacement hardware
  • Fasteners that do not thread smoothly
  • Missing original screws

Older saltwater engines deserve especially close inspection because corrosion can affect both the fastener and the threaded mounting hole.

Powerhead Rebuild Considerations

Before installing the crankcase hardware:

  • Clean threaded holes
  • Inspect crankcase threads
  • Clean mating surfaces
  • Check locating pins
  • Verify internal components are correctly positioned
  • Follow the proper crankcase sealing procedure
  • Install each fastener in its correct location
  • Follow the proper tightening sequence
  • Torque hardware to the correct engine specification

Do not substitute a similar looking bolt unless its dimensions and application are confirmed.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Crankcase to Cylinder Fastener – Used to secure major powerhead components together
  • Production OMC Application – Used on numerous standard Johnson/Evinrude engines
  • SST-45 / Formula Light Application – Factory quantity of 2 per race powerhead
  • Works With Other Crankcase Hardware – Used alongside 308742, 308752 and related powerhead fasteners
  • Ideal for Rebuilds – Useful during crankshaft, bearing, piston, or crankcase service
  • Replacement for Damaged Hardware – Suitable for corroded, rounded, or missing original screws

Liquid Revolutions Racing Experience

At Liquid Revolutions, we pay close attention to the different crankcase fasteners during SST-45 powerhead assembly because the bolts are not all interchangeable simply because they perform a similar job.

The SST-45 uses two 308747 screws in the crankcase-to-cylinder assembly.

Keeping the correct hardware in the correct location is a simple but important part of building a reliable race powerhead.

The same 308747 screw is also useful for owners rebuilding standard Johnson/Evinrude engines, making it a good example of a production OMC part that carries directly into the SST-45 racing platform.
